In the standard hoist, the chain is guided by a shield, which ensures that the chain stays in place. With the guide rollers, the chain will pass smoothly through the hoist. This makes working with the chain hoist a lot nicer and the quality of the hoist is a lot better.

Overload protection means that once the hoist has exceeded its maximum lifting capacity, a one-way clutch engages which only slips in the lifting direction - the load can only be lowered at this point. This safety feature is becoming more common to help users avoid the hazardous conditions that occur when lifting equipment is used above its maximum working load.
