Tips & Tricks | Chain blocks

A hand chain block can be used for many situations, but what do you pay attention to when you are using one? You can read all about it in this blog.

Applicability

A chain block can be used for many applications. You always use them upright and vertically. Do you need a hoist that can be used both vertically and horizontally? For towing or tensioning, for example. Then choose a lever hoist. Mitari chain blocks are easy to use thanks to optimal transmission. This makes operation easy and light.

Specification

The hand chain blocks are equipped with a swiveling hook, at both the top and bottom. The high-quality materials ensure an extra-long lifespan. The chain hoists are available in various designs with load capacities of 250 kg to 20,000 kg. In many cases, manual chain hoists are used in combination with trolleys or beam clamps.

Overload protection

Our range includes two types of chain blocks: with and without overload protection. Overload protection extends the service life of the hoist and reduces repair costs by preventing overloading. Adjustment of the overload protection and customization of the lifting height (lifting chain and control chain) are carried out in our own workshop.

Inspection before use

Before each use, it is important that the hoist, the suspension, the supporting structure, and possibly additional options have been checked for any defects. The brakes should work and the loads to be lifted should not exceed the maximum of the hoist construction. You can check all this by lifting and lowering a load at a short distance, for example. Before use, the load chain should also be inspected for proper lubrication, deformation, cracks, wear, and corrosion damage. Also, check the operating chain before use, it always has a “fitted open chain link” due to the customization. It is also significant to check both the upper and lower hook for corrosion and other damage. The safety latch should obviously work properly.

Ensure that the chain can run freely through the hoist and that the chain's welds are facing outwards. Hand chain blocks must also be tested annually by an expert. So also check that the hoist has been inspected before use. If the hoist is not inspected, in case of doubt or defects, please contact us directly for an inspection in our workshop. View the inspection deadlines for your hoisting equipment here.

Correct use

  • The chain block is marked with its capacity (WLL). This is the maximum load that should not be exceeded.
  • Lifting or transporting loads should be avoided if there are persons in a dangerous range of the hoist.
  • It is not allowed to be under a lifted load.
  • Loads must not be left unattended in hoisted conditions for long periods of time.
  • As a user, you may only move a load if you are confident that the load is correctly hooked up or that no persons are in the danger zone.
  • When hooking up the hoist, the user must ensure that the hoisting equipment can be operated in such a way that there is no danger from the equipment itself, the carrier, or the load.
  • The device can be operated within a temperature range of -10 degrees and +50 degrees Celsius. Please contact us in case of extreme conditions.
  • At temperatures below zero degrees Celsius, check the brake for freezing.
  • Never load the hooks on the tip.
  • Welding on parts of the block is prohibited. The load chain must not be used as the earth when welding.
  • Always work in a straight line between both hooks.
  • The load chain may not be used as a sling chain.
  • Do not hoist or transport persons.
  • Do not knot or shorten the load chain.

Available with a certificate

Certificates can be bought with a single product for an additional €3.50. With a valid certificate, you are always insured in case of accidents. We, therefore, advise you to have all your lifting equipment and other devices certified and to have them re-inspected on time, for the safety of the user(s). Inspections with certification are usually cheaper than inspections for products without certification. This allows us to easily view the history of a product with certification and, also makes the scheduling process of an inspection all the faster.
